Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
