Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
