Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
