Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
