Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
