Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
