Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
