Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
