Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps.
