Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
