Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
