Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
