Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
