Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
