Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win.
